PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern softball team (10-9) fell, 2-0, to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (14-2) on Wednesday after inclement weather forced the game to end in the fifth inning.
The only hit for the Sharks came off the bat of Samira Tanaka (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) with a single to left field in the top of the fourth inning.
The Sailfish scored their first run on a throwing error in in the bottom of the second inning. With runners at first and third, Lindsey Johnson attempted a steal, and the throw went into centerfield. Jen Hunter, who was on third base for PBA, advanced home for the Sailfish during the play, giving PBA the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, PBA hit three singles in a row to notch their second run of the game. Camille Benito brought a run with a single to left-center, pushing the Sailfish up, 2-0.
A second lightning delay forced the game to be called in the top of the sixth, while also cancelling the second game of the doubleheader.
PBA's pitcher, Mackenzie Johnson, threw five shutout innings, allowed one hit and striking out three.
Rebecca Thornton (Fr., Lodi, California) took the loss for the Sharks, pitching four innings, walking two and allowing six hits.
